The architecture industry is constantly evolving as advancing technology and modern developments lead to new and exciting design and construction opportunities. Architectural technicians play a vital role in the industry, working alongside architectural professionals to plan and execute sophisticated residential and commercial designs. Architecture programs at Rumi Academy train students to enter this progressive field, with practical skills and advanced training with the latest architectural technology.

If you’re interested in designing and planning buildings and want to start a career in the architectural field, here’s what you need to know.

Architecture Courses
Architecture programs generally fall into one of two categories:

Architectural Technician: These programs are two-year diploma programs that prepare students for work in the construction industry, alongside architects, engineers, contractors and other professionals. Students will learn to prepare construction drawings and specifications as well as architectural designs, using the latest computer technology. Course topics include drafting, building code standards, materials and measurements, as well as the history of architecture and architectural design.

Architectural Technology: Architectural technology programs have the same foundations as technician programs, but have a third year that is used for more advanced training. Depending on the program, the third year may involve further general knowledge and additional training with architecture software and technology, or specialized training in one area of architecture, such as commercial detailing.

Specialty architecture programs are also available. For example, the green architecture graduate certificate program focuses on environmentally friendly construction and designing for sustainability, while the three-year architecture and construction program combines design training with construction industry skills such as estimating, building codes, building systems and more.

Qestions & Answers

The role of an architect requires a combination of artistic creativity, technical proficiency, and effective communication skills. Architects contribute to shaping the built environment, creating functional and aesthetically pleasing spaces that respond to the needs of individuals and communities. Additionally, architects often play a key role in advocating for sustainable and environmentally conscious design practices.

Today, an architect must have the skills necessary to synthesize, integrate and coordinate various parts of a project into a composite whole. This is not only to satisfy functional and safety requirements, but also to contribute to an orderly, visually pleasing, and sustainable environment. As architects are increasingly being asked more specific questions with regards to specific subjects, there is a growing trend to specialize to meet complex issues, requirements or contexts. Areas of specialization may include aspects of planning and programming, building regulations, design, production, management, sustainability, site supervision or construction. The individual architect may thus become an expert in a specific building type, or accredited or certified in specialties such as building code, building envelope, project management, sustainable design, or heritage conservation. However, maintaining a general expertise in all aspects of the profession remains a foundation of keeping architecture healthy and enhances the credibility of the profession in the eyes of the public. The architect also maintains an ethical responsibility for passing along their knowledge and skills, through teaching, mentoring, and hiring and training the next generation of architects.

Architects engage in a wide range of tasks throughout the various phases of a project, from initial conceptualization to construction and post-occupancy evaluation. Here are some common tasks performed by architects:

Project Conceptualization,Client Interaction,Site Analysis,Design Development,Building Information Modeling (BIM),Regulatory Compliance,Construction Documents,Coordination with Consultants,Budgeting and Cost Estimation,Project Management,Construction Oversight,Quality Control,Post-Occupancy Evaluation,Sustainability Integration,Technology Integration,Documentation and Reports,Continuous Learning

These tasks collectively contribute to the successful planning, design, and execution of architectural projects, reflecting the architect’s role in creating functional, aesthetically pleasing, and sustainable built environments.

Rumi Academy architecture programs typically require an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, including grade 12 English and mathematics credits. For architecture graduate programs, completion of a degree or diploma in a related program is required.

Career advancement opportunities for architects can take various forms, allowing professionals to expand their roles, take on more responsibilities, and specialize in specific areas. Here are common avenues for career advancement in architecture:
